Web Destop Fever Relaxed

After spending alot of time trying to figure out how these new technologies can manage, I am happy with my setup :D

I use protopage and netvibes :D See I still like some features from another "Web Desktop", Netvibes's tabs are great and browsing the news is great along with your fav photos.

So if I was working somewhere else in the world and don't have my computer setup for browsing my online apps and news, I just log in :D

I use webnotes to setup "Desktop Titles" so I know which area I in (Hope that naming feature comes out soon.)

I also decided to make a "web bookmarks" called "My Online Apps", where I just click on what feature I want such as, "email goes to my gmail", "photos goes to my flickr.com" etc etc.

I have desktop2 with only one "webpage" which shows my netvibes.com
Desktop3 and 4 are my public areas if I want to amuse the public.
Desktop 5 is my research area. Where theres lots of notes (But that's private to me in away?)

Well I hope you enjoyed reading my thoughts on managing the web.

You noticed I have collasped a few windows as the mouse over is great for just seeing quick information.

Visit my flickr.com to see my arrangement :P Visit my flickr.com to see my findings, which is in my public area :P

Start to feel like borg?

With all these ways to share, photos, thoughts, videos, files, documents etc.

Tags are the craze to see what's hot online, heres one that was made on ruby on rails.

http://www.tagviewer.com/

Tags the way to see interest?

absolutely amazing way to find popular interest and findings. Tried using Ice Rocket and I was amazed.

Websites such as "flickr.com", "blogmarks", "box.net" and other blog sites use tags to help see what is popular!. The way you see them words bigger the more popular it is really. Simple.

Marketing will probably use it for one, handy to see other ppls thoughts based on your thoughts!

Once again the internet has amazed me. Be careful what you want to show online:D Make sure it's legal somehow and be nice :D Enjoy the other ppls experiences and chat wisely :D The internet can show alot from a username.

Technology Addiction

I believe since sites came out with web2.0 technologise(Ajax for one), i believe it could make alot of ppl addicted to the internet. Mind you other technologies such as TV,Video, Video games can all be addictive. I for one got a little addicted to "Web Desktops" as you can see in my blogspots, flickr, and blogmarks, use tags "web webdesktop, learn"

Don't get yourself in a loop of being addicted to technology, take the odd break from it, keep your skills up to scratch. Well here is a few more pointers

Possible Reasons
Everyone wants to experience life as fully as they can, the internet is kinda cheating as you don't actually do them but enjoy seeing the experiences.

Advice
I believe it is wise to take timeout from using computers, games, internet, movies. Enjoy the great out doors when ever you can. See your friends and marvel life as full as you can.

Also another note, if you want success are a great life, you need to specialse in set of skills, so it's wise to keep them upto scratch (Guess I make that expcetion).

For me reading books (with ACTUAL paper) helps and enjoying the regular walk around the block to see what's happening for regular exercise.

"Web Desktop" Designing?

Take a look at my webspace online. I didn't have to code anything!!!!! (kinda scares me but wow)

With "Protopage" it gives you the ability to design anything with minimal coding!!!!

Check my space online by clicking here!

Took me a while to lay it all out. Rather buggy at times but seems to stay almost all stable. What no web developers? Course we will need them to add more functionalities!!!

Protopage(version2) Bugs found!
Not sure if you're away but when setting up many webpages, and have a "public page", I had a webpage on [Page1] and it showed up in my public area after I logged out. wierd huh? So I deleted some of my private area :(

Web Management Tips

Basically these "web desktops" help manage yourself online rather, "Hmmm what shall I search for?". "Which page shall I go to?" "Is someone online?, which website shall I go to?

Well thanks to web desktops, you can go straight to your spaces on the internet without having to load them up all the time! Thanks to these "Web desktops"

They sure do take a while. I hope they don't reset everything :P That's all we want lol

Just think, you won't have to search or type in loads of web addresses to get your website controls and admin areas.

Protopage!
Pages to manage your types of Desktops (Admin areas, News area, Fun area, etc)Use the panels. They are located in the bottom left :D They cant be rename :P If you end up having many pages blank, Protopage said, "they be automatically delete if not used".

Use "Webpage" module as muchas you like to help customize your views!

Pages
  • Page 1 should be general such as, "Calendar, gmail, popmail,Your most watch news, Weather"
  • Page 3 should be made your public area for everyone to see your set. Also it's handy for your why? Cuz it's FREE related? :P FREE or page 3 could pics about you. You can basically make a website with all this without having to anything!!!!!!!!!! No coding? Huh? Well it depends on what modules are available for these "web desktops" hehe.
  • Your pages shuold be categoried on your behaviour such as, "Researching web desktops" ? (Give a guess someone tried loading all the "web desktops" into all one page. Hmmm)
  • Since some "Web desktops" don't supply tabs, use "www.netvibes.com" as one of your pages So you benefit from all the features of other "Web Desktops".
  • Have "Web Desktop" to only your SOFTWARE page and use "webpage" module to go to all your faviourate software. You won't ever have to upgrade ever again! Writely.com will be one of mine alright :P Or maybe that other online word processor.
  • Have a page for just Games!!!!

Docking
  • If you page represented "admin" sites then use "edit->"send to doc to stop all the clutter :D
  • Use them one at a time or collapse them with the two little arrows.
  • Don't forget to name your webpages so you can identify them

Notes
  • Use widgets and name them carefully :D Thenk why'd you'd need it there such as, 'It's for my researching' cuz I'm researching newspapers from around the world about a particular topic.' thew. Didn't put a comma in that long sentance. Basically you have all the tools are the READY!!
NetVibes
NetVibes I believe have done well in choosing inital first modules available to quickly add on to your "Web Desktop"

BookMarks
  • You can use blogmarks to store your boomarks.

Your Fun Misc Stuff like Photos, movies
  • Use box.net on netvibes.com
Firefox
If you have "All in gestures" module installed or have some kind of gesture use them on your links alright. Helps having to worry about changing the webpage addresses in "Protopage"

Final Thoughts and Security
Now that you have customized your page behaviours, "Research,News,Admin Areas", you'd think what about secruity

Don't share too much of pages as it would reveal what you are doing on the internet. Absolute amazing for policing! Ok let's dump our browsers.

Brillant to see what your childern are up to. I believe setting up one place with only certain webpages opened.

Don't forget these "Web Desktops" are still in beta, "alpha?"
Post you coments on some more tips if you like or comment away :D

Web Desktop [A Usefull thing?]

For one Web Desktop is handy for people who cannot afford computers yet or at a point where they cannot get to their computer.

The internet is the internet, "Web Desktops" is the internet managed.
I like my home computer to private with no feeds, just my personal files private
"Web Desktops" Manage yourself on the internet

Which Web Desktop will succeed? And is sharing geting to the point of over top? I know if you want stay anoynmous, you better keep your name and address no where on the internet other than your alias.

Will these "Web Desktops" eventually replace our home systems? (BOLD statement, "I don't think so")

I know it will be useful to customize views on how you want to view the internet's thoughts and photos based with "tags", makes having to browse alot in away I think.

It will be interesting to see people's reactions change as these "web desktops" begin to spread more.
youOS
Yet Another Web Desktop
youOS It even has a shell! Just cannot customise much other adding stuff. Looks promising althought it does lack some features like customization of stuff (They probably doing that I hope)

It's like the Web is turning into our very own private area!

This deserves a special mention as it is being designed to be like your very own operating with installing applications and has a shell terminal!

Your START! = Faster Progress!

I found this of a great use to make using Desktops at ease.

Make your own Start for quicker application browsing

Steps
  1. Make a folder folder called "My Start" on the desktop
  2. Make categories of your applications
  3. Make and place shorts into the folders
  4. Rightclick toolbar at the bottom and select "toolbars->new toolbar"
  5. Add Select "My Start" folder and click OK!
Optional
  • You can unlock the toolbar and move it to the far right Like I have :D
  • Place "My Start" folder into a shared area and read only for large users!
Benefits
After using "YOUR START" for a long time you will be faster at loading your applications (When you get familar with your menu folders)

Web Desktops Reviewed (Requires web2.0 features)

Wow wee Web2.0 Web Desktops!

After discovering "Web 2.0" latest breakthrough in Web Desktops I couldn't help but fiddle and see which is the best. Some I just knew I wouldn't enjoy it due to restrictions. Anyway here is my findings, there will be a Summary of all the "Web Desktops" to help choose :D Oh and another thing about these "Web 2.0" technologies, I haven't seen any adverts yet! So I will talk about the future of web desktops.

I read up on what "Web Desktops" are out there at TechCrunch (A place to see the latest on web2.0 findings). Having looked at the various desktops, I test the most appealling looks and they as follows (I bracketed their most impressive features):
  • Google (Block modules) <--- I believe this started it all but I'm not sure
  • Netvibes (Block modules,TAB System,FlickrPhotos)
  • Goowy (Window modules, Panel Doc)
  • Protopage (Window modules, Desktop Pages,[Web Page]Module,Share Desktops to world)
A Little Story
Since fiddling with Google and adding many modules, I couldn't help but notice it's lacking TABS, so I moaned at Google (Used feedback) and acidently bumped into netvibes then I kinda switched. Having bumped into Netvibes I bumped into "goowy" and "protopage" with the use of my Netvibe tabs!

The Web Desktops!

Google Homepage Page
Probably the first (I'm not sure) but after seeing the others in development I was gobsmacked, hooked and reel in to this new craze 'Web Desktops'. Over all its worth trying out to see what started it all.

Positives
  • Has the most modules out there due to, "they got theirs out first!".
  • You can check most of your Google features that comes with a Google accounts. :D
  • Can have many modules as you like!
Negatives :
  • Their module catalogue is rather vast and you can get yourself lost in browsing continously hoping you will find your desired module, a nice place to waste time :P
  • Boomarks is ok but end up getting a long list.
  • lacks organise features such as tabs or windows. It also looks clunky looking as it's google style to look basic (Probably inspired by w3c).
Interesting Modules (That I found of use)
  • RSS Feeds : These are at a plenty!
  • Gmail : Privacy is at ease here as you are already at Google!
  • Weather
  • Stocks
Netvibes
This was my first gobsmacker (Amazed!), the best feature of this is the TABS! They can; move, change icon, rename any tab you like! And best of all you can have MANY TABS! Still in Beta though

positives :
  • The RSS Feeds has a nice feel to it, once you have opened up an article from one of your feeds you get to browse it first with out any adverts!
  • Having customised your tabs you can set different tabs for different uses such; Research,Programming News, World News, General (For all your important stuff like todo)
  • You can share a harddrive with box.net, the module is rather nice :D You can share up to 1GB!
  • "Add Content" modules supplies a nice bunch of facilities
Negatives :
  • No window system to scatter your modules

Interesting Modules (That I found of use)
  • Flickr Photos : I was able to see a photo selection of my choice in different tabs!
  • Rss Feeds : Impressive preview system before actually viewing the article.
  • Weather : Practically standard
  • WebNotes : It's nice to color them in and have different nots on different tabs
  • ToDo : Rather nice maybe a bit cluncky in saving and edit
  • Blogmarks : Great way to save your bookmarks online
  • box.net : You can share a harddrive! Store up to 1GB worth data!

Goowy
This is a very impressive web desktop looks rather like a MAC OSX!, there are a few draw backs which I noticed. First you need "Flash", some of the modules are constrainted such as Calendar,Email,GamesView, constrainted as in windows don't move. However the animation and graphic system of Flash helps you to say this is your Desktop.

positives :
  • The ability to move windows in "Mini"
  • ManageMini helps organse your RSS Feeds
  • Contact,Calendar,Email has an impressive GUI system
  • Nice Customisable window colors and background!
  • Impressive Animation added to modules!
Negatives :
  • Once you have fiddle with the features you may find it lacks organise features such as TABS.
  • You only have ONE place to store have all your RSS Feeds open. They only exception a "Manage Minis" window that you cannot hide but provides a way to browse your RSS feeds.
  • You are also restricted on your emails which I don't like. Another draw back it is, you might end up getting odd functionlities with the windows (Could be cuz it still needs more development?)
  • Performance is a biggy for slow machines
  • Need Macromedia Flash installed
Interesting Modules (That I found of use)
Weather : Its good enough :D
Desktop and (mini) : (which help set your mind straight, who needs many RSS feeds and gadgets?)
Stocks : Nice animation
FlickPhotos : Changes regularly like a slide show !
Games : For time wasting :P

Protopage
WOW I thought, its based views around Linux Desktop with the ability to add as many desktops as you like! (I Think? don't qoute me on that)

positives :
  • Features are another wow such as 'Changing the appearance of windows' but lacks transparency features that Goowy has.
  • Web Page module is by far handy as you view other "Web Desktops"!
  • Share Desktops! Very impressive
Negatives :
  • The bookmarks could do with a little work as it doesn't provide the ability to use "tags".
  • You cannot change the name of your pages
  • You may accidently share some information
  • Works best in FireFox (Not sure if this is negative or positive)
Interesting Modules (That I found of use)
WebPage : By far the most handy :D
boomarks : Lacks "tags" though

Conclusion
You'd think after seeing movies with computer GUI move clips being setup for different views, may likely has come to a reality? (Not quite, you cannot compile in these web desktops! hmmm) :P

I wish they hurry up finishing off, as it's hard to choose. I for one I am voting for protopage and Netvibes. The window systems may be of an anoyance sometimes but well worth trying it :D I ended up having an account at all the web desktops and in the end blended the two together with Protopage!

There is no advertisements yet so I will be most impressed if it stays like that! FireFox and Microsoft Internet Explorer I used to try them out (with the exception of Protopage which best works in Firefox).

I am speechless still and it has made browsing the internet most interesting and rewarding in someways as you end up getting a more faster pace of feeds from the news, photos, and blogs.

Microsoft Academic.live.com is looking promising for schools!

Lets hope Web 2.0 stays ad free! And notes is great to quickly store your thoughts on things!

You don't have to worry about your harddrives anymore as big corporations will hold them and look through them (Hope they don't go over board on that note)
"Welcome to the world of TOMORROW!!!!"
